RansomPlus Ransomware Description

The RansomPlus ransomware is a new malware threat which uses the AES cipher to encrypt target user files and extort the victims for a ransomware payment. The security experts are still researching it and at this moment it is not known if the virus is a strain of a popular family.

What we know is that it has been developed by a programmer known as sergej using the Visual Studio 2015 IDE. We suspect that the virus is derived from the code base of some of the viruses that hit last weeks as they were also developed in this environment and bear similar extensions.

Upon infection the virus starts its encryption engine which targets specific user file types. While we do not have the full list we suspect that the following types of files are affected – documents, text files, databases, photos, music, videos, backup images and etc.

When the encryption process is complete the following ransom note is displayed to the victims:

YOUR FILES ARE ENCRYPTED!!!
To restore (decrypt) them you must:
1. Pay 0.25 bitcoin (btc) to address 36QLSB***
You can get BTC on this site http://localbitcoins.com
2. After payment you must send Bitcoin Transacation ID to E-mail: [email protected]
Then we will send you decryption tool.

RansomPlus Ransomware Distribution

The RansomPlus Ransomware is distributed mainly using the typical methods of spreading malware.

The criminal operators can host the malicious binary by spreading spam email messages that may link or contain the binary file directly. Depending on the campaign the attackers can opt to use social engineering tricks to lure the target into thinking that the virus hosts important that is valuable to them.

Other ways of infecting the machine with the virus is by instituting direct hacker attacks via exploit kits. But that’s not all. Lately it has been a popular tactic to also serve malware via hacked download sites and P2P networks. This is why computer users should always download software and games from official sites.
