The Avyu Virus Impact on an Infected PC
What is Avyu virus? It is a data locker ransomware that interferes with computer systems in order to corrupt valuable data and extort ransom payment from victims.
The Avyu virus is a new version of STOP ransomware. It drops an executable file on the system to start the infection process. Once the executable is running on the system Avyu virus becomes able to complete several attack stages. Such kind of malware primarily aims to find files of particular types on the PC so it can encrypt them with a strong cypher algorithm. It is known that the Avyu virus uses a strong algorithm to encrypt target user data. That’s why all corrupted files remain inaccessible. Additionally, they appear with the extension .avyu appended to their names. The Avyu ransomware tries to extort a ransom fee for their decryption. For this purpose, it drops a ransom message and loads it on the screen.

Avyu Virus Distribution Methods
The malicious samples that trigger Avyu ransomware virus may be delivered via a Word document attached to an email or sent via a message on any social media channel. It is also possible for the document to be added to a ZIP archive file. Once the file is started on the PC, it may ask you to enable macros which will start the Avyu infection. The document may also be designed to display a system notification that misleads victims to click the “OK” button in order to open the content of the file. Another commonly used trick of ransomware and malware dissemination is a spoofed link that redirects to a crafted web page that can automatically download the payloads on the PC. The sender itself may impersonate well-known companies and services. However, malicious traits can be revealed almost always. Online scanning services like ZipeZip (free online archive extractor and malware scanner) and VirusTotal (a free service that analyzes suspicious files and URLs) can help the detection of potential malware infections.
Impact of Avyu Ransomware Virus
The so-called Avyu virus has been detected in active attack campaigns. It is based on the code of the infamous ransomware family STOP. The code of this threat is designed to plague essential system settings with the purpose to reach target types of files and encode them with a sophisticated cypher algorithm.
The beginning of the attack is marked by the execution of Avyu ransomware payload file. Soon after this event occurs, the threat becomes able to pass through several stages. At first, it triggers the creation of additional malicious files that support all of the following infective operations. The ransomware could either create or drop them on the system. Typically, threats like Avyu ransomware are designed to place malicious files in the following system folders – %Roaming% , %Windows% , %AppData% , %Local% , %Temp%
Afterwards, Avyu ransomware starts executing them in a predefined order. As a result, some essential system settings are heavily modified and misused by the cryptovirus. Affected could be also registry keys stored by the Registry Editor, legitimate processes and other major components that control the regular system performance.
Following system corruption, the Avyu virus utilizes a built-in encryption module to complete its main purpose – data encryption. Since this module is designed to transform the code of targeted files with a sophisticated cypher algorithm, the files remain unusable until their code is reverted back to its original state.
All files that are renamed with the extension .avyu are encrypted by the ransomware. Unfortunately, they could be all files that store valuable data of your like:
Following data corruption, Avyu STOP virus drops a text file which contains a ransom message. This file appears on the screen as its purpose is to blackmail you into paying hackers a ransom fee. The file which is generated by the engine.
For the sake of your security, it is recommendable to refrain from contacting hackers. They may attempt to trick you once again by sending an inefficient decryption tool or additional malware. Furthermore, you will only encourage them to continue with their vicious operations, if you pay the demanded ransom. Security experts advise victims to remove malicious Avyu ransomware files and wait patiently for a free decryption solution. The good news is that Emsisoft has released a free STOP ransomware decryption tool. It is not updated to support the Avyu STOP virus strain but chances are that it will be very soon. Don’t lose faith, remove Avyu ransomware, back up .avyu files and wait until the decryptor is updated.
