How Does Allcry Virus Infiltrate the System?

The majority of the Allcry virus attacks are carried out through email spam messages. The criminals behind the threat utilize the most popular tactics by sending the malware strains using social engineering tactics ‒ sending them through body links or file attachments.

Other e-mail tactics include the use of payloads. Two of the most popular types are documents and software installers. The hackers utilize them to make the victims infect themselves. The installers are legitimate applications that have been taken from the official vendors, modified to include the allcry virus and then distributed via messages or hacker-controlled sites. In a similar way documents have embedded macro scripts that lead to an infection ‒ rich text documents, spreadsheets and databases.

Note that the documents and installers can also be distributed via hacker-controlled sites. They may come under different forms: download portals, redirects or fake product pages. In all cases computer users should only seek to look out for software from official vendors only. P2P networks where pirate content is usually found such as BitTorrent can spread the Allcry virus as well.

Another option is the use of browser hijackers which are malicious browser plugins. They are usually made for the most popular applications: Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera, Microsoft Edge and etc. Once installed they change important settings such as the default home page, search engine and new tabs page to point to a criminal site. During this process the Allcry virus can be used to infect the computers as part of the virus sequence. Computer users also need to be careful as hackers have been known to abuse ad networks, redirects and web scripts to cause virus infections as well.

Infection Flow of Allcry Virus

Malware experts discovered a dangerous new threat called the Allcry virus which appears to be an original invention. The initial security analysis does not show any correlation between it and any of the famous malware families. The current attack wave seems to use a single binary file (allcry.exe) which triggers the infection.

When this is done a ransomware process is started. This is when the virus starts to encrypt sensitive and system files according to a predefined built-in list of target file type extensions. This is done so in order to allow the hackers the customize the Allcry virus according to the predefined targets.

The security analysis shows that the virus can be updated in the future to include other modules that can enhance its capabilities. Examples include the inclusion of Trojan instances that spy on the users and and can steal sensitive files even before the ransomware process has begun. Another option can be the use of the Allcry virus to deliver additional threats.

Once the ransomware engine is started a range of data processing actions are executed. Based on the settings the encryption process is started which uses a list of predefined file type extensions: documents, videos, photos, music, archives, databases, etc. The processed files are renamed using the .allcry extension. An application frame is created with the title ALlcry crypter which reads the following:

Some files have been encrypted
Please send 0.2 bitcoins to my wallet address
If you paid, send the machine code to my email
I will give you program to decryper
If there is no payment within seven days,
we will no longer support decryption
Email: [email protected]

The collected samples associated with the current attack do not apply a cipher, but rather only rename the files. The hackers use the familiar tactic of blackmailing the victims for a ransomware fee of 0.2 Bitcoins which is the equivalent of about 880$.
