MerryChristmas Ransomware Description

MerryChristmas Ransomware is a dangerous new malware that has been used in various attack campaigns against a variety of computer users – from individuals to large companies. The virus is also knwon under some other aliases such as MRCR1, MRCR and Merry X-Mas.

The security analysis is not yet complete and at the current moment we do not have information if this malware is a strain of a family or is an independent creation.

What we know is that it targets popular user files that the creators have deemed sensitive. The list includes various Office documents, multimedia files including audio, video and photos, databases and other sensitive information which might be of value to the victim. All affected files receive the .MRCR1 extension.

After the encryption engine has completed it crafts a ransomware note in a YOUR_FILES_ARE_DEAD.HTA file that contains the following message:

03 days 23:57:30 0109
TIME AFTER ALL FILES WILL BE DELETED
YOUR ID
NOW YOU NEED TO PAY TO RECOVER YOUR DATA

Any attempts to return your files with the third-party tools can be fatal for your encrypted files!
The most part of the third-party software change data within the encrypted file to restore it but this causes damage to the files.

MerryChristmas Ransomware Distribution

MerryChristmas Ransomware is distributed mainly via spam email campaigns. The researchers that the contact email address used by the operators of this virus were previously known for spreading Globe2 samples and initiating related attack campaigns.

As such it would be no suprirse to find the MerryChristmas Ransomware appear in various fake installers and software updates available on hacked and malicious download sites and BitTorrent trackers.

STEP II: Show Hidden Files

1)

      Open

My Computer

        – Click on “

Organize

        – Select “

Folder and search options

 

        – Select the “

View

        ” tab

 

        – Go under “

Hidden files and folders

        ” and mark “

Show hidden files and folders

        ” option

3) Windows 8/ 10

        – Open “

View

        ” tab

 

        – Mark “

        ” option

4) Click “Apply” and then “OK” button

STEP III: Enter Windows Task Manager and Stop Malicious Processes

1)

      Hit the following key combination:

CTRL

      +

SHIFT

      +

ESC
2)

      Get over to “

Processes

3)

      When you find suspicious process right click on it and select “

Open File Location

4)

      Go back to

Task Manager

      and end the malicious process. Right click on it again and choose “

End Process

5)

    Next you should go folder where the malicious file is located and delete it
