Distribution of .godra Virus

The .godra Virus is a new virus which has been sighted in a limited attack campaign. At the moment the security researchers cannot determine the primary infection strategy. We presume that the most widely used tactics are going to be employed.

Among them are the email messages created in an automated way and sent to large lists of potential victims. The .godra Virus can be directly attached to the messages. This is one of the easiest way for the criminals to attempt the infection. However a lot of email hosting providers usually capture the signatures of the virus and as such discard such messages or label them as dangerous or spam. Other infection methods related to this one is the option of inserting hyperlinks in the body content of the messages. The links are usually labelled as leading to a familiar website or a file of user interest. Redirects can redirect to hacker-controlled sites, infected payloads or other instances that can lead to an .godra Virus infection.

The computer criminals behind the malware can create malicious sites or download portals which distribute malware of different kinds, including the .godra Virus. A popular option is the use of infected documents which may be of different types ‒ spreadsheets, rich text documents, presentations and databases. They are modified to initiate the virus once the built-in scripts are run. Usually when the files are opened a notification will ask the users to run the macros (scripts). If this is done the infection follows.

The hacker-controlled sites are specialist portals that have been created either manually or automatically by the criminals behind the .godra Virus. They can either directly distribute the threat by initiating various scripts or automated operations or link to such instances. Redirects are usually caused by email interaction, ad networks or other browsing activity. However one of the main sources is the availability of browser hijackers. They are malicious addons made for the most popular web browsers ‒ Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Opera, Microsoft Edge and Safari. Once installed they not only infect the users with the malware, but also redirect the victims to a hacker-controlled site. Depending on the configuration the browser hijackers can also steal sensitive information such as any stored passwords, account credentials, history, bookmarks, form data and settings.

Impact of .godra Virus

A new malware threat has been identified by the security community called the .godra virus. The initial code analysis shows that it does not originate from any of the known malware familes. At the moment the identity of the hacker or criminal collective is not known.

At the moment the attack campaigns carrying it are being distributed primarily at users located in Croatia and the Balkans. The collected samples appear to be based on a modular framework which can be further extended with components in newer versions of the .godra virus.

The malware engine starts to extract sensitive information about the compromised host. Usually this data includes the following: installed hardware components, available software and the user configuration. Having the exact profile of the machines allow the hackers to gather statistical information about the success of their campaigns. This also gives the hackers the ability to retrieve personal information from web browsers for example. Malware samples like this one are usually made compatible with the most popular ones: Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Microsfot Edge, Safari and Opera. Once accessed the operators can retrieve all stored contents including the cookies, bookmarks, history, passwords and account credentials.

The .godra virus continues further by reporting the obtained data to the operators using a network connection the command control servers defined by the operators. All of the collected values are used by the infection engine to generate the host’s unique infectio ID that is used to identify each target.

During these phase various system services and applications are also profiled. The security analysts detected that the reason for this is the search for stored terminal service keys. They are used to allow the Windows computers to be remotely controlled over the Internet. If such account credentials are found and then transmitted to the operators then they would be able to take over control of the machines without resorting into the use of Trojans.

Once this first stage has completed the infection engine follows with the next step. It installs itself as a persistent threat which makes it hard for the victims to remvoe the .godra virus manually. The malware module starts to edit and create registry values as well as add new files and copy its components into the Windows system folders to facilitate a deeper infection.

The security analysts note that the .godra virus also has the ability to hook up to running processes and crate its own by inducing different privileges as it sees fit. To facilitate a deep infection the hackers behind it have bundled the ability to access the system certificates settings.

One of the dangerous aspects that are related to the .godra virus infections is the fact that it can be used as a primary malware distribution app. Throughout the years we have observed complex infection patterns that deliver threats using this manner. It also extracts the regional settings and several other variables that are used to determine the users location. This is information as it gives the .godra virus the ability to automatically select the best language version of the ransomware note.

The .godra virus starts the encryption phase once all preliminary steps have complete. It uses a strong cipher to target the most widely used data such as the following: archives, documents, photos, videos, music, databases and configuration files. As a result all processed data is renamed with the .godra extension.

We have obtained the Croatian sample which creates a ransomware note in a file called KAKO OTKLJUČATI VAŠE DATOTEKE which translates to “How to decrypt your data”. An machine-translated version of it reads the following:
