How Does .492 Virus Infiltrate the System?

The .492 virus is a dangerous ransomware that uses a variety of different methods used to infect the intended targets. The hackers behind use the most popular ways of spreading malware.

The majority of hacker attacks carrying the .492 virus use email messages utilizing social engineering tricks. The primary goal of the criminals is to make the users infect themselves. This is done by either clicking on inserted hyperlinks or executing file attachments. The majority of the messages usually pose as coming from popular companies or government agencies.

Some of the detected instances pose as payment receipts or other financial documents. Like other similar ransomware it employs archive files designed using the ZIP extension. The messages use random names. Examples include: A23402.zip, P232290.zip, P111230.zip and others. Some of the detected strains contain no body content and simply deliver the file attachments directly.

Other delivery methods include infected software bundlesweb scripts. Its important to note that usually hacker-controlled sites are responsible for the delivery. The criminals create download portals that imitate legitimate sources. Often P2P networks like BitTorrent are also used. The infected software installers are modified executables of popular applications.

Web scripts that can lead to an infection include browser hijackers, ad networks and redirects. Of them the browser hijackers are probably the most dangerous malware instances. They represent malicious web browser extensions that modify essential settings: the default home page, search engine and new tabs page. They are changed to a hacker-provided address that is capable of infecting the users with malware, including the .492 virus.

Infection Flow of .492 Virus Virus

The .492 virus features most of the typical behavior patterns associated with ransomware of this type. The initial code analysis shows that this is a yet another Globe imposter strain that follows the usual attack mechanism. No information is available about the hacker or criminal collective behind it.

Upon infection the virus engine is immediately started. Before launching the encryption process several Windows changes can be enforced:

  • Microsoft Windows Registry Changes ‒ The virus engine is able to modify essential registry settings. This can cause a persistent state of execution, a way of countering manual user removal attempts. The virus engine can monitor the behavior of the victims and actively defend itself against deletion. Registry changes can also lead to system stability and performance issues.
  • Shadow Volume Copies Deletion ‒ The .492 virus may delete the found Shadow Volume copies on the local computer which can counter data recovery attempts. The affected data can be restored using a professional-grade software. We have outlined this in our detailed removal guide.
  • Files Modifications ‒ System-wide modifications can lead to modification of important Windows files.

The .492 virus starts the ransomware encryption engine soon after the initial infection is complete. Unlike other similar malware it employs a predefined “white list” of files and directories that are skipped. This is done in order not to cause any harm to the critical operating system components. The collected samples showcase the following names as part of it:

Windows, Microsoft, Microsoft Help, Windows App Certification Kit, Windows Defender, ESET, COMODO, Windows NT, Windows Kits, Windows Mail, Windows Media Player, Windows Multimedia Platform, Windows Phone Kits, Windows Phone Silverlight Kits, Windows Photo Viewer, Windows Portable Devices, Windows Sidebar, WindowsPowerShell, Temp, NVIDIA Corporation, Microsoft.NET, Internet Explorer, Kaspersky Lab, McAfee, Avira, spytech software, sysconfig, Avast, Dr.Web, Symantec, Symantec_Client_Security, system volume information, AVG, Microsoft Shared, Common Files, Outlook Express, Movie Maker, Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, YandexBrowser, ntldr, Wsus, ProgramData

The encryption engine itself uses a predefined list of target file type extensions that are encrypted with a strong cipher. We have been able to extract the target extensions from the available samples:
