YouAreF*cked Ransomware Description

Security researchers have announced the discovery of a new virus called the YouAreF*cked Ransomware. The initial security analysis is not yet complete and we do not have detailed information about the virus yet. At this moment it seems that it is not based on any of the famous malware families.

The interesting fact is that the virus engine does not employ encryption as its method of infection. It merely adds a specific marker string to the affected file types. The list includes a set of file type extensions that are used by some of the most popular applications:

.doc, .docx, .gif, .jpg, .pdf, .psd, .txt, .xls, .xlsx

The virus crafts a corrupted DOC and TXT file which have little meaning and only contain the ransomware’s name reference.

YouAreF*cked Ransomware Distribution

At the moment there are only a limited number of malware samples collected. This does not give the experts enough data to judge what are the primary infection sources.

We assume that the hackers use the most popular tactics to spread the virus:

  • Email Spam Messages – The virus propagates through email spam messsages that link the malware in the body of the contents, frequently using phishing tricks. Other attempts include the attachment of the malware disguised in counterfeit documents.
  • Browser Hijackers and Redirects – All types of malicious ads and redirects, including browser hijackers can lead to a dangerous malware infection. These types of viruses inject scripts that automatically cause the victim’s browser to navigate, download or execute content from hacked sites or hacker-controlled sites.
  • Infected Software – Software installers are a main cause of virus distribution and infection. They are bundled with many of the packages that computer users acquire through unofficial download sites and pirate BitTorrent trackers.
