VBRansom Ransomware Description

A new malware threat has been spotted, known as the VBRansom ransomware which is still under development by its programmer. According to the reports the virus is created in the C# programming language and is not from one of the famous malware families. The anti-virus scans point out that it is uses its own code base.

Fortunately its encryption engine is not fully functional yet. However according to the research in future releases the virus ransomware will target specific user files and encrypt them using a strong cipher. Like other related malware threats the victims are going to be extorted for a ransom sum payment.

Once the encryption stage is complete the virus crafts a ransom note bearing the name V B R A N S O M V E R S I O N 7.txt which contains the following message:

Your Document, Photos, Videos, Databases and Other Important File Has Been Encrypted by Vbransom To Get Your File Back You Must Do This Several Action:
1. Download Tor Browser 2.
Go to This Your Personal Page
3. Follow the Intruction to Decrypt Your File 4. if You Don’t See Vbransom Screen Your Antivirus Probably Deleted It
For Decrypting Your File You Must Download the Vbransom Screen From -vb191hfrismaldfma.onion/vbi4nsOm.exe
Remember! Don’t Try to Kill, Delete and Shutdown Vbransom if You Do W Will Make Your Computer Unbootable and the Encrypted Data Cannot Be Decrypted Anymore

According to this the virus follows the usual tactics by instructing the victims to use the anonymous Tor network to conduct the payment.

We anticipate that a lot of users might get infected by the ransomware once it has been updated with a working encryption engine. From the preliminary testing it seems that once it is complete it will target the most widely used file types – images, music, videos, documents, configuration files, backups and etc.

As the ransomware is still not functioning properly we can conclude that its danger level is low. However the fact that users can get infected by it is a security incident that is as much serious as a dangerous virus infection.

VBRansom Ransomware Distribution

The VBRansom Ransomware is found to be distributed as a counterfeit Adobe Reader installer.

Such files can usually be distributed in phishing emails or malicious download sites where viruses are often hosted. In many cases P2P networks like BitTorrent are also used by criminals to distribute malware.

All computer users should double check the sources from where they download such software to avoid infections with ransomware such as this one.

We recommend computer users to use a trusted anti-spyware utility to both remove active infections and protect their computers. At the moment the anti-virus vendors are still in the process of adding the VBRansom Ransomware’s signature to their updated definition sets.
