Searchdirma.com Browser Hijacker – How Did I Get It?

The reason you got Searchdirma.com on your computer is likely due to installing a freeware program. Porn sites, download mirrors, and torrent trackers often have these infections. Watch out for any .exe files that are downloaded automatically. Another old trick that often results in a hijacker is the fake download button. The download mirrors will often have multiple options to download something. If you’re unlucky enough to not pick the right one (if there even is a right one), you’ll end up with a malicious exe on your computer.

If you install this file, your browser will likely be infected with a hijacker. Browsers that can be affected are Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Opera, and others.

Searchdirma.com Browser Hijacker – What Does It Do?

Sites like Searchdirma.com tend to be created by low-tier Web advertisers. This is how their site looks like:

As you can see, Searchdirma.com copies the generic template pioneered by Google. It has a search bar and a few added links (this is important.)

The site lacks its own search database. Instead it redirects to Yahoo:

What we have here is a good ol’ hoax search engine. Hoax search engines are sites that mimic the functions of Google, Bing, or Yahoo Search. They will redirect to those sites.

You’re probably wondering what’s the point of it all. We’ll now go back to the links. These connections are set-up by the crooks behind Searchdirma.com so they can track your browsing habits. That information can then be used to spread cheap ads.
