The Search.newtab-mediasearch.com hijacker is a new dangerous threat that has been identified by security researchers. This is delivered via a Media-Newtab browser extension offered by Imali Media. According to the description it allows users to “Customize your New Tab page and enjoy beautiful wallpaper images with every new tab with My Start for Chrome”. Another variant of this malware is the Search.newtab-tvsearch.com browser hijacker.

When the user installs the extension it automatically changes the browser settings and reconfigures the home page, search engine and new tabs page to point to the search engine.

The web site itself is not safe, because it does not display a full and comprehensive terms of use or privacy policy pages. In many cases this behavior may lead to distribution of tracking cookies that are used to observe the search behavior of the user.
