Satana Ransomware Description
The Satana ransomware is malware Trojan that is particularly damaging to the computer victims. It not only encrypts targer user file types but also prevents the Microsoft Windows operating system from booting up properly. The criminal developers demand a ransom sum payment for both the file and system recovery.
Upon infection Satana ransomware crafts a user account control (UAC) notification which spawns repeatedly until the user clicks on “Yes”. The ransomware then moves itself to the Appdata\Local\Temp location where it starts to profile the infected host and gather important system information. This data is used to generate the AES encryption key which is used by the encryption module.
The following file types are targeted by Satana ransomware:
.bak .doc .jpg .jpe .txt .tex .dbf .db .xls .doc .jpg .jpe .txt .tex .dbf .db .xls .cry .xml .vsd .pdf .csv .bmp .tif .1cd .tax .gif .gbr .png .mdb .mdf .sdf .dwg .dxf .dgn .stl .gho .v2i .3ds .ma .ppt .acc .vpd .odt .ods .rar .zip .7z .cpp .pas .asm
The virus uses a portable executable (PE File) to ovewrite the MBR (master boot record) of the drive. The original MBR is copied and stored in an encrypted form. This makes the computer unable to boot properly. A ransomware message is displayed to the victims which displays the following contents:
