QuakeWay Ransomware Virus in More Details

The infection is initiated by QuakeWay malicious payload which contains the malicious code written in AutoIt programming language. Once executed it performs a sequence of actions that cause massive damage to the whole system. The most unpleasant consequence in case of QuakeWay virus infection is the encryption of target files that are renamed with the .org extension and cannot be accessed. It is likely that the ransomware targets documents, images, photos, presentations, projects, audios, videos, archives, databases, etc. QuakeWay is utilizing strong cipher algorithm that modifies the original code of the data and generates unique decryption key that should be used for data recovery. In order to receive the decryption key, the user is urged to write an email to ‘[email protected]’ with personal System UID and ask for it as described in the ransom message named __iWasHere.txt

The following text is presented to victims’ infected computers (__iWasHere.txt):

===> Your files content changed to unreadable content to you and your PC, For restore operation send an email to [email protected] and send your UID came bellow as mail subject you will get back all of your files by instruction as our reply.
===> WARNING !!!Dont be stupid to delete this TXT file(or any change on your locked folder),else YOUR FILES WILL BE CORRUPT AND CANNOT BE RESTORED ANYWAY! EVEN BY INSERT TRUE CODE !
===> ATTENTION !!This is not a Ransomware. We don’t need your money Just wanna care you and upgrade your security.
Your System UID for email it is –>> {redacted}: {redacted} <-- We answer it during 7 days.

The QuakeWay ransomware case seems to be a cyber joke that just wants to remind users to upgrade their security and prevent future ransomware infections. However, QuakeWay payload is detected as a malicious Trojan variant by a large number of antivirus programs and being such it is likely to be developed to touch Windows Registry settings ensuring steady persistence on the computer. It may create malicious files on the infected host controlled by hackers via established connection with their command and control server. Thus they can obtain sensitive personal information and still bank and other profile credentials.

Furthermore, even though the crooks state “We don’t need your money Just wanna care you and upgrade your security.” there is always chance that their further instructions will extort money from victims or trick them into installing fake security or data recovery program that may be another malicious program.
