Distribution of Ordinypt Ransomware
The Ordinypt ransomware is a new virus which has been sighted in a limited attack campaign. At the moment the security researchers cannot determine the primary infection strategy. We presume that the most widely used tactics are going to be employed.
Among them are the email messages created in an automated way and sent to large lists of potential victims. The Ordinypt ransomware can be directly attached to the messages. This is one of the easiest way for the criminals to attempt the infection. However a lot of email hosting providers usually capture the signatures of the virus and as such discard such messages or label them as dangerous or spam. Other infection methods related to this one is the option of inserting hyperlinks in the body content of the messages. The links are usually labeled as leading to a familiar website or a file of user interest. Redirects can redirect to hacker-controlled sites, infected payloads or other instances that can lead to an Ordinypt Ransomware infection.
The computer criminals behind the malware can create malicious sites or download portals which distribute malware of different kinds, including the Ordinypt Ransomware. A popular option is the use of infected documents which may be of different types ‒ spreadsheets, rich text documents, presentations and databases. They are modified to initiate the virus once the built-in scripts are run. Usually when the files are opened a notification will ask the users to run the macros (scripts). If this is done the infection follows.
The hacker-controlled sites are specialist portals that have been created either manually or automatically by the criminals behind the Ordinypt Ransomware. They can either directly distribute the threat by initiating various scripts or automated operations or link to such instances. Redirects are usually caused by email interaction, ad networks or other browsing activity. However one of the main sources is the availability of browser hijackers. They are malicious addons made for the most popular web browsers ‒ Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Opera, Microsoft Edge and Safari. Once installed they not only infect the users with the malware, but also redirect the victims to a hacker-controlled site. Depending on the configuration the browser hijackers can also steal sensitive information such as any stored passwords, account credentials, history, bookmarks, form data and settings.
Impact of Ordinypt Ransomware
Ordinypt ransomware is a newly discovered threat that seeks to impact the victim computers to a very large extent. It is being operated by an unknown hacker or criminal collective on a worldwide scale.
It appears that the first wave was set against German users only however it is speculated that another hacker attack will follow. Its interesting to note that the virus code does not borrow any code from the famous malware families. The infection components are original and made specifically to target the intended targets.
The hackers have devised the German attack campaign via email malware. Automatically generated messages that follow certain templates are sent to the victims by using social engineering tactics. The body contents displays text that pretends to be resumes that appear as being sent in reply to job postings. The pretended sender is masked as a female and the emails contain two file attachments:
- A JPG Image ‒ Supposedly of the woman who is sending the resume.
- Fraud Archive ‒ Contains the Resume and CV files.
The security analysts note that the two files have double extensions. The hackers attempt to fool the users into opening them by having custom icons that make them appear as PDF files. Instead they are actually executable (EXE) files. When executed the infection is started.
The Ordinypt ransomware process has two distinct phases of execution ‒ a first-stage preparatory sequence and the ransomware process itself. Depending on the hacker configuration the virus can perform a series of hacker actions including the following:
- Registry Modifications ‒ The victim computer have important important Windows registry values changed by the Ordinypt ransomware. As a result the users may experience performance issues, application failures and the inability to use some Windows features.
- Security Bypass ‒ As a result of the system interventions it may be possible for the virus engine to disable any installed security software.
- Persistent Installation ‒ If configured properly the Ordinypt ransomware can install itself on the computer in such a way that actively prevents manual removal attempts.
When all of the prerequisite checks are done encryption engine is started. The security researchers warn that the Ordinypt ransomware does not function like other similar threats. It uses a list of target file type extensions, but instead of processing them with a strong cipher they are deleted from the system. Another virus file is placed in the same location to fool the users. As always the malware engine seeks to target the most widely used data including the following:
- Images
- Videos
- Music
- Archives
- Documents
- Configuration Files
- Backups
An algorithm is built into the virus to generate a random victim ID containing 14 alpha-numeric characters. A ransomware note is generated in a file called Wo_sind_meine_Dateien.html which translates to “Where_are_my_files.html”. It contains the following message:

This translates to the followng:

After successful payment, you will automatically receive the decryption software and the associated decrypt key.
ATTENTION!
If we do not notice any payment within 7 days, we assume that you are not interested in decrypting your files. In this case, we will irrevocably delete the decrypt key and your files will be lost forever.
Your files were encrypted with military quality using a 256-bit AES algorithm. We do not recommend wasting your time with a handwritten decryption attempt, it would only cost you extra time and money, but your files would still be encrypted.
bonus
In addition to the decryption software, after successful payment, you will receive instructions on how the malware could reach your system and how you can protect yourself from further attacks in the future!
successfully
As usual the hacker operators utilize the strategy of blackmailing the users into paying the sum of 0.12 Bitcoins which is approximately $850. The security analysts discovered that the ransomware engine uses a random function to present the Bitcoin address. The virus code contains a list of 101 hardcoded wallet addresses. Such measures are done in order no
We recommend that all users abstain from communicating with the hackers and use our full Ordinypt ransomware removal guide below to recover their data and delete the active infections.
