BTCamant Ransomware Description

Security researchers have uncovered the BTCamant ransomware which is still under an active investigation. The virus’s name comes from Mission 1996 which is a reference from the “Mision: Impossible” movie. According to the released information so far this is a strain or an improved version of the Radamant ransomware, an old virus that was first uncovered in December 2015.

It encrypts target user files using the AES-256 cipher and demands a ransom payment of 0.5 Bitcoins. It is very likely that the virus targets the same list of file type extension as the core virus. The full list includes the following data:

The Radamant ransomware is also known to delete the Shadow Volume Copies of the infected host which is typical for most malware of this type. We assume that this feature is kept in the BTCamant iteration as well.

The crafted ransom note has the following contents:

Hello!
For getting back Your PC data You need to contact with us through email as soon as possible: [email protected] , [email protected]

If not much change has been introduced to the codebase then the virus can easily be removed using a trusted anti-spyware utility.

The virus targets the user data and appends the .BTC extension to the affected files. A randomly-named ransom note is crafted in each folder where a file has been encrypted.

Most anti-spyware and anti-virus vendors have already added the file to their updated definitions sets.

BTCamant Ransomware Distribution

At this moment there is no way to distinguish which distribution method is used by the BTCamant Ransomware.

Still the most widely infection tactics used by malware families such as this one employ spam email messages, malicious ads, browser hijackers and etc.
