New YourRansom Ransomware Description

Malware researchers discovered a new YourRansom ransomware strain. This version is much more dangerous than its original form.

The initial security analysis shows that several advanced features have been added. The results show that the virus is capable of scanning for any installed or running debugging tools which are often employed in honeypots or testing environments. Indirectly this means that other stealth protection may have been added – they mask the infection in the presence of several types of security measures.

Other newly features include system information extraction and the monitoring for certain registry values and their modification.

Upon infection the new YourRansom ransomware is able to deliver other payloads, modify Windows files and communicate with the remote C&C servers.

We do not have detailed information about the encryption engine. According to the researchers the .gui extension is renamed to every affected file. We pressume that the virus targets the most commonly used data – videos, music, photos, documents, configuration files and etc.

A ransomware note titled “README.txt” is crafted on the User’s computer and the contents of it read the following:

We suspect that the new YourRansom ransomware is delivered using the mainstream infection methods:

  • Email Spam Messages – Hackers use spam email messages that contain links that lead to the virus infections. In other cases the malware may be directly attached to the emails and use various social engineering tricks to try and lure the target into executing it.
  • Software Installers – Many viruses are bundled alongside with software installers that are found on hacked and malicious download sites and P2P networks. A popular infection strategy is to plant them in pirate versions of well-known applications, games, fixes, patches and etc.
