Opera released email messages to all Opera Sync users. All 1.7 million accounts have been breached by criminals, and the vendor is requiring a password reset for all users of the cloud sync platform.
All Opera Sync Users Should Reset Their Password
Opera announced the security breach on Friday. The IT staff detected the intrusion attempt and quickly blocked access to the criminals. However user credentials may have been compromised. This includes Opera Sync account information which places all users in a high risk. All passwords are stored in encrypted form or are halted ad salted. However, the Opera Sync team has issued a mandatory password reset notification to all of its users. Also the users are urged to change all passwords for the sites and services that are stored in their Opera Sync account.
The breach is still under active investigation and at this moment there is no information about the identity of the criminal(s) behind the attack. This is the big intrusion after Dropbox, another popular web service that is used by a lot of users.
As the security breaches start to increase in frequency, especially in the last few years, all Internet users should follow good security practices when setting up their passwords. As it turns out, it is now sufficient to use a strong combination of letters, numbers and special characters, but to use different passwords for each web service and change the passwords often.
If you have not yet received an email from Opera and are a user of the service, then you can apply the password reset manually.
1. Visit the Reset Password page by clicking here.
2. Enter your email or username in the field.
3. Click on the Reset password button to continue.
