KillerLocker Ransomware Description
KillerLocker is a new ransomware strain that showcases typical functions by encrypting different types of victim files and extorts the computer user into paying a ransom fee to recover the files. The ransomware is contained in an executable binary file. The threat is packed in a single file that is distributed via different methods.
KillerLocker Ransomware – Distribution
KillerLocker is distributed via the typical means – spam email messages with malicious links or attachments serving the ransomware to the computer victim. Other means of propagation is through adware bundles or payload scripts. At the current moment, there are no known attack campaigns using the KillerLocker ransomware as payload.
KillerLocker Ransomware – More Details
Upon execution, KillerLocker starts its own singe process without displaying any windows to the user. It manipulates the Windows system registry and encrypts a variety of user file name extensions, including the most popular ones with the AES-256 cipher. When the encryption is complete, the victim files are renamed with the .rip extension. The ransomware instructions are placed in a text file copied to the Windows desktop and other locations on the hard drive, and they are displayed to the user.
The instructions are written in Portuguese and the victim has 48 hours into paying the ransom fee otherwise their files will remain unrecoverable. The hackers have also added a time counter to further convince the users into paying the sum.
