HCrypto Ransomware Description
The HCrypto ransomware is one of the newer threats that have been been based on open-source code. This particular strain is based on the HiddenTear project and the first incidents with it have been discovered a few weeks ago.
The malware uses the AES and RSA ciphers algorithm that encrypts the target user files and appends a “.hcrypto” extension to them. When the ransomware is executed it starts to target the following extensions:
3gp, .7z, .apk, .avi, .bmp, .cdr, .cer, .chm, conf, .css, .csv, .dat, .db, .dbf, .djvu, .dbx, .docm, ,doc, .epub, .docx .fb2, .flv, .gif, .gz, .iso .ibooks,.jpeg, .jpg, .key, .mdb .md2, .mdf, .mht, .mobi .mhtm, .mkv, .mov, .mp3, .mp4, .mpg .mpeg, .pict, .pdf, .pps, .pkg, .png, .ppt .pptx, .ppsx, .psd, .rar, .rtf, .scr, .swf, .sav, .tiff, .tif, .tbl, .torrent, .txt, .vsd,.wmv, .xls, .xlsx, .xps, .xml, .ckp, zip, .java, .py, .asm, .c, .cpp, .cs, .js, .php, .dacpac, .rbw, .rb, .mrg, .dcx, .db3, .sql, .sqlite3, .sqlite, .sqlitedb, .psd, .psp, .pdb, .dxf, .dwg, .drw, .casb, .ccp, .cal, .cmx, .cr2.
The ransomware note is created as a “ext3t.pdf” file that is placed in every folder with infected files. The initial research shows that the HCrypt ransomware even runs on power events – reboots for example.
As the ransomware is based on open-source code we may see other modifications and variants of it in the near future.
HCrypto Ransomware Distribution
HCrypto is delivered primarily through social engineering tricks by sending spam email messages to various computer users. The messages usually contain contents that imitate financial documents, invoices, greeting cards and other similar types of information.
They often contain attachment or provide malicious links that lead to the infected binaries.
