Distribution of GandCrab 5.0.7 Ransomware
GandCrab 5.0.7 virus is a new data locker ransomware that has been released in attack campaigns against computer users worldwide. The threat could be utilizing widely used tactics of distribution to infect computer systems.
The GandCrab 5.0.7 is a newly discovered strain of the malware family. It has been detected in a limited test release which probably signals that forthcoming infections are going to target specific countries. So far the acquired samples have been detected in a limited test run indicating the the real attacks might use different tactics.
A main method used by the malicious actor behind GandCrab 5.0.7 is the coordination of SPAM email messages — they are used to spread the threats by sending out messages that pose as legitimate notifications sent by popular Internet portals or services that the targets may use. The virus files can be either directly attached or linked in the body. They can also be uploaded to fake download sites which are designed to appear like any of the popular Internet portals or vendor download sites. The malicious actors may use similar sounding domain names, certificates and hijacked design and contents to coerce the victims into thinking that they are accessing the legitimate address.
Another way that the threat may spread is through infected payloads — the use of various files that are infected with virus code. A popular example is the malicious document which can take any form: presentations, rich text files, spreadsheets and databases. Once they are opened by the victims a notification message will pop-up asking the target users to enable the built-in scripts. If this is done the virus infection will follow. The other popular technique is the inclusion of the code in application installers. They are malicious copies of legitimate setup files of popular end user programs that have been modified with the GandCrab 5.0.7 ransomware code.
Ransomware files are also popularly spread by fake user profiles — they can post to community forums or social media accounts. The criminals can utilize both fake or stolen identities to increase the number of infected user.
In certain cases the criminals may also be distributed via malicious browser plugins — additions to the most popular web browsers that are advertised as useful. The plugins are uploaded to the official repositories and often make use of fake or hijacked user reviews and developer credentials. Once they are installed by the users they will execute their built-in instructions that in many cases leads to the GandCrab 5.0.7 ransomware virus infection in the end.
Impact of GandCrab 5.0.7 Ransomware
The GandCrab 5.0.7 ransomware is a new sample of this malware group. It appears to use the same schemes of infection and post-installaton actions. When it is deployed to the victim machines it will immediately start two modules that will run before anything else is introduced to the system. These two procedures are the following:
- Security Software and Services Removal — The GandCrab 5.0.7 virus samples are known to search for security software, firewalls and debug environments and disable their engines or remove them completely. This is in order to protect the ransomware from detection.
- Data Harvesting — In order to differentiate between the infected hosts a special ID is associated with each compromised computer. It is done using an algorithm that takes its input values from various information sources: user settings, hardware components and environment values. Additionally, if configured so, it can also search for strings that can identify the victims by searching for their personal information. Its many forms include the victim’s name, address, phone number, location and even stored passwords. The security analysis of the recent GandCrab ransomware samples confirm that the engine can also access applications data like the one belonging to web browsers.
As soon as this step is completed the malware engine will have the ability to modify the whole system and all areas of it. The ransomware will be installed as a persistent threat which will automatically start the virus once the computer is started. This is done by reconfiguring the boot options and configuration files. This renders many manual user removal guides non-working as they will require access to these services.
Modifications to the Windows Registry can have a tremendous impact on the system and installed third-party applications. Changes made to the Windows Registry can render the whole system unstable with distinct performance issues.
The GandCrab 5.0.7 ransomware strain is able to hook up to other running services and system services. The malware family has been found to extract data found from the installed web browsers. This allows the virus to build an even greater profile of the victim users.
When the preliminary machine preparation have completed a Trojan connection to a hacker-controlled server located on the TOR hidden network. This function is used to report the active infections and may also be used to take over control of the infected hosts, steal files before they are encrypted and also deploy other threats. The delivery additional malware is very dangerous due to the fact that the GandCrab ransomware has already bypassed the security measures.
One of the most common examples given with this ransomware family is the ability to cause co-infections with cryptocurrency miners. Future attack campaigns can use this approach to directly gain income thanks to the infections. When miner code is engaged it will download tasks from a specific server to which it will report to as well. These tasks will be run in a sequence and in parallel causing system instability. They will make use of the processing hardware: memory, hard disk space, CPU and GPU.
If all modules that are part of the current configuration have executed correctly the ransomware itself will be started. Using a built-in list of target file type extensions all kinds of sensitive user data will be processed with a strong cipher. An example list would be the following:
- Archives
- Databases
- Backups
- Music
- Videos
- Images
The processed files will receive a randomly generated extension. The ransomware note will be created in multiple text files and also designate itself as the desktop wallpaper.
