SureRansom Ransomware Description

The SureRansom ransomware is a new malware that does not actually encrypt user files or intrude any system changes. It is merely only the latest example of a scareware virus which imitates the dangerous effects of an actual ransomware infection.

At the moment the code analysis is still not complete and the researchers cannot conclude if the virus originates from a prior malware family or another virus.

Upon infection the virus insitutes a screenlocker which prohibits normal computer interaction.

A ransomware note is crafted and placed in two files – RESTORING FILES #.txt and RESTORING FILES #.html. They contain the same message:

All of your files were encrypted by a strong encryption with RSA-2048 using CryptoShield 1.0.

SureRansom Ransomware Distribution

The SureRansom Ransomware was discovered in the last days of January 2017 and it mainly targets English-speaking users around the world.

The malware is mainly distributed by email spam messages (with or without using phishing strategies) and infected software installers. They can be found on hacked or malicious download sites and P2P networks. In addition the virus can also be spread using redirects such as browser hijackers, malicious ads and etc.

STEP II: Show Hidden Files

    1) Open My Computer/This PC
    2) Windows 7

      – Click on “Organize” button
      – Select “Folder and search options
      – Select the “View” tab
      – Go under “Hidden files and folders” and mark “Show hidden files and folders” option

    3) Windows 8/ 10

      – Open “View” tab
      – Mark “Hidden items” option

STEP III: Enter Windows Task Manager and Stop Malicious Processes

    1) Hit the following key combination: CTRL+SHIFT+ESC
    2) Get over to “Processes
    3) When you find suspicious process right click on it and select “Open File Location
    4) Go back to Task Manager and end the malicious process. Right click on it again and choose “End Process
    5) Next you should go folder where the malicious file is located and delete it

STEP VII: Preventive Security Measures

    1) Enable and properly configure your Firewall.
