V8Locker Ransomware Description
The V8Locker ransomware is a new strain that has been identified by the computer researchers. The encryption module uses a combination of the AES and RSA ciphers.
At the moment the strain is under an active investigation and we do not have detailed information about its impact. What we know is that the ransomware targets the most popular user files and encrypts them using the above-mentioned threats. The compromised files are renamed using the [email protected]__.v8 extension.
The crafted ransomware note reads the following:
What happened to your files ?
All of your files were protected by a strong encryption with RSA-2048. More information about the encryption keys using RSA-2048 can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSA_(cryptosystem)What does this mean ?
This means that the structure and data within your files have
been irrevocably changed, you will not be able to work with
them, read them or see them, it is the same thing as losing
them forever, but with our help, you can restore them.Contact us by email: [email protected]
Depending on the amount and types of files the ransomware operators may ask a different sum.
V8Locker Ransomware Distribution
The V8Locker Ransomware uses the typical distribution tactics by infecting targets mainly via spam email messages. The identified samples were identified in emails that used various social engineering tricks by impersonating legitimate institutions and types of content such as customs forms, financial documents and various types of notifications. Other ways of getting infected with the V8Locker ransomware is by exploit kits or hacks done using the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP).
