FileIce Ransomware Description

The FileIce ransomware was reported by the security researcher Karsten Hahn from GData. There is only very limited information about the ransomware. We do not know how the encryption engine works and what target files are compromised by the virus. What we know for sure is that the malware loks the screen and display various surveys to the user. This could mean that the hackers have used one of the following damage scenarios:

  • Dummy Lock Screen – The ransomware is actually an adware infection that seeks to make income for the operators by displaying sponsored surveys. No actual file encryption is carried out.
  • Lock Screen as Disguise – The lock screen and the surveys are used as a distraction. In the background the ransomware code targets specific user files and then transforms into a full-blown threat that extorts money from the victims.
  • Payload Combination – The FileIce ransomware is used to both encrypt the user files and install additional malware on the victim computer.

The threat is already detectable by most anti-virus and anti-spyware solutions under various names such as:

  • Mal/MSIL-BA
  • Trojan.Win32.Z.Lockscreen.673044[h]
  • UDS:DangerousObject.Multi.Generic
  • Gen:Variant.Zusy.164501 (B)
  • Win32.Trojan.WisdomEyes.16070401.9500.9990
  • Win32:Malware-gen
