Distribution |
Current attacks are being carried out through a Trojan, namely the Trojan.Agent.RNS. Other distribution methods are expected. |
Ginemo Ransomware Description
What is interesting about this particular threat is that it does not encrypt the target user files. The developers have used another tactic to blackmail the victims – they lock the screen of the computers. Security experts have uncovered a hardcoded code that can be used to restore access to the computers – 690717803018521.
The ransomware also adds two registry entries to the Windows operating system:
- HKCU\..\RunOnce: [userini] C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Sdat.exe
- HKCU\…\Winlogon: [Shell] C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Sdat.exe
At the current moment the ransomware is not very dangerous to the users, although it is a persistent threat. We expect to see future versions that contain improved code.
Ginemo Ransomware Distribution
The Ginemo ransomware so far has been delivered using a Trojan virus, the Trojan.Agent.RNS to be exact. Upon infection with it the computer users are also plagued with the dangerous ransoomware. The binary file is disguised as a Sdat.exe binary file.
We expect to see other distribution methods employed by the hackers as well – spam email campaigns and infected software bundles.
