Deadly Ransomware Description

The Deadly ransomware is a typical malware of this type. Upon infection it targets certain file extensions and encrypts them with a strong AES-256 cipher. When the operation is complete the private key (used for decryption) is sent to the remote malicious server, operated by the operators of the ransomware. Deadly has an unusual trait because it is devised to encrypt the victim files on a specific date – January 1st 2017. The ransomware is programmed on the .NET Framework which is relatively easy to detect. Some anti virus vendors label this threat under the following names:

  • Atros4.ABVF
  • MSIL/Filecoder.CS
  • Ransom_JANBLEED.F116JA
  • Trojan.GenericKD.3586576 (B)
  • Trojan.Win32.Agent.nexptm
  • Trojan/Win32.Agent.N2124761547

The ransom note is named with a random note and includes the following message “Deadly v.1.01 For a Good Purpose”. The ransom fee that is required by the criminals is is Bitcoins that are equivalent of 500 US Dollars. A sample ransom note reads the following:

Deadly

Key Will Be Destroyed on:
&Date&
Your Files are Encrypted:
&FileCount&

Your files have been safely encrypted on this PC: photos, videos, documents, etc. Click “Show encrypted files” Button to view a complete list of encrypted files, and you can personally verify this. Encryption was produced using a unique public key AES-256 generated for this computer. To decrypt files, you need to obtain the private key. The only copy of the private key, which will allow you to decrypt your files is located on a secret server on the Internet; the server will eliminate the key after a time period specified in this window. Once this has been done, nobody will ever be able to restore files… To decrypt the file you will need to send $500 USD in the form of BTC to the following bitcoin address:
&bitwallet& (link to a guide on how to buy and transfer Bitcoins)
After payment contact [email for contact] with your transaction details and [your ID]. Once the payment is confirmed you will receive decryption key along with decryption software. Any attempt to remove or corrupt this software will result in immediate elimination of the private key by the server. Beware.’

Deadly Ransomware Distribution

Deadly Ransomware is distributed via a Trojan technique. Popular sources of infection include exploit kits which target security vulnerabilities on the victim machine and malicious ads. The ransomware can also be delivered via phishing and spam email campaigns that link to the threat or have it attached as a file. Reports indicate that the hackers often use DOCX (Microsoft Word Documents) and PDF files as payloads for the Deadly Ransomware.
