KillDisk Ransomware Description

KillDisk Ransomware is an evolved threat that was previously only used to compromise files without encrypting them or extorting the users for a ransomware payment. The tool was made famous by the infamous Telebots hacking group which targeted high-profile targets. Telebots created the initial version of the malware in the Python programming language and included a sophisticated Telegram API for secure communication to the infected hosts.

The researchers uncovered that the individuals samples had their own unique token embedded in the code of the virus which means that each infected machine used its own Telegram account. For more information on the tool read our in-depth guide on the Telebots attacks.
The new malware iteration is a fully-fledged ransomware which is even more dangerous. This is a much more deadly variant as it encrypts the compromised files and extorts the victims for a huge ransom payment – 222 Bitcoins.

The uncoveered samples showcase that each individual file is affected with its AES private key and the keys themselves are encrypted with the RSA-1028 cipher. The list of affected file type includes the most popular documents, databases, source code, disk images, backup files, emails and various multimedia files. Network drives, removable storage and local partitions are all affected.

Computer victims are shown an orange-colored ransomware note that shows the following message:

The virus requires elevated privileges (root on UNIX-LIKE systems) to operate. Upon infection it also registers itself as a service and has the ability to terminate various processes.

KillDisk Ransomware Distribution

The virus targets high-profile victims. Some of the security reports state that cyber criminals are targeting chemical plants located in Eastern Europe. This means that it is very likely that the Killdisk ransomware may be deployed after a succesful intrusion attempt.

The attacks are initiated through sophisticated software vulnerabilities and direct hacking attacks against the critical facilities.
