iRansom Ransomware Description

The iRansom ransomware is a new strain of the Crowti malware family which features some interesting capabilities. This virus depends on the .NET Framework version 4.5 to be installed on the host computer as it is a dependency. The binary file which holds the infections bears the name “iRansom.exe” and in some instances it may be signed with a counterfeit digital signature.

The virus behavior begins with a system check which searches for the .Net framework. If version 4.5 or newer is available then the ransomware continues to operate. The next step is to scan the local computer and the attached removable storage devices for specific file types which are then encrypted with a strong cipher. According to the security analysis iRansom has the ability to terminate various database servers in order to impact the hosted data as well.

The most popular file type extensions are affected by the threat – Office documents, video and audio files, images and text files. The compromised files are renamed with the LOCKED extension.

The developers of the virus have used a HTA-based ransomware note which runs as an application on the victim’s Desktop. The message conntains the following text:

‘Your files have been locked by iRansom!
**Shutting Down or Attempting to stop this, will render your files useless forever!**
[random number] total files have been encrypted using
the strongest encryption And a unique key, generated for this computer.
