Fadesoft Ransomware Description

Security experts announced the discovery of a new virus – the Fadesoft ransomware. This is a typical malware that exhibits the typical behavior patterns of similar ransomware strains – it encrypts target user data and then extorts the victims for a ransomware payment.

The virus contains a few interesting features, it is able to bypass the UAC (User Account Control) prompt. Network communication with the remote C&C servers is done using the Tor and Privoxy networks. This particular ransomware uses several onion sites which are further obscured to prevent thorough forensics.

The encryption engine has been found to encrypt the following file type extensions:

When the encryption process is complete a screenlocker image is presented to the victim. This is a window that prevents further interaction with the infected computer. It displays the following message:

YOUR PERSONAL FILES ARE ENCRYPTED !

All your important files stored on this computer and attached drives have been encrypted
using strong AES-256 + RSA-2048 cryptography algorithms.

Click on [SHOW LOCKED FILES] button to see which files have been encrypted.

our server. There is no other way to decrypt your data without the private key.

Fadesoft Ransomware Distribution

The Fadesoft Ransomware is primarily distributed using spam email messages. The hackers bundle the virus in email spam messages that pose as being from legitimate sources, primarily financial institutions.

Other ways of getting infected include payload downloads via malicious redirects such as browser hijackers and infected software installers.

STEP II: Show Hidden Files

    1) Open My Computer/This PC
    2) Windows 7

      – Click on “Organize” button
      – Select “Folder and search options
      – Select the “View” tab
      – Go under “Hidden files and folders” and mark “Show hidden files and folders” option

    3) Windows 8/ 10

      – Open “View” tab
      – Mark “Hidden items” option

STEP III: Enter Windows Task Manager and Stop Malicious Processes

    1) Hit the following key combination: CTRL+SHIFT+ESC
    2) Get over to “Processes
    3) When you find suspicious process right click on it and select “Open File Location
    4) Go back to Task Manager and end the malicious process. Right click on it again and choose “End Process
    5) Next you should go folder where the malicious file is located and delete it

      – Hit WIN Key
      – Type “restore your files” in the search box
      – Select “Restore your files with File History
      – Choose a folder or type the name of the file in the search bar

STEP VII: Preventive Security Measures

    1) Enable and properly configure your Firewall.

    3) Secure your web browser.
    4) Check regularly for available software updates and apply them.
