[email protected] Ransomware Description

The [email protected] is one of the latest October 2016 malware threats that has been identified by security experts. The discovered strains were found in infected macros in Microsoft Office documents.

The initial code inspection reveals that this ransomware is a variant of the Crysis family. It also uses the “.xtbl” file name extensions when it infects the target user files. The following file name extensions are affected:

.mp4, .rar, .zip, .flv, .png, .jpeg, .txt, .jpg, .ibank, .js, odc, .odm, .odp, .ods, .odt, .docm, .docx, .doc, .odb, sql, .7z, .m4a,.wma, .gdb, .tax, .pkpass, .bc6, .bc7, .avi, .wmv, .csv, .d3dbsp,.sie, .sum,.t13, .t12, .qdf, .bkp, .qic, .bkf, .sidn, .sidd, .mddata, .itl, .itdb, .icxs, .hvpl, .hplg, .hkdb, .mdbackup, .syncdb, .gho, .cas, .svg, .map, .wmo, .itm, .sb, .fos, .mov, .vdf, .ztmp, .sis, .sid, .ncf, .menu, .layout, .dmp, .blob, .esm, .vcf, .vtf, .dazip, .fpk, .mlx, .kf, .iwd, .vpk, .tor, .psk, .rim, .w3x, .fsh, .ntl, .arch00, .lvl, .snx, .cfr, .ff, .vpp_pc, .lrf, .m2, .mcmeta, .vfs0, .mpqge, .kdb, .db0, .dba, .rofl, .hkx, .bar, .upk, .das, .iwi, .litemod, .asset, .forge, .ltx, .bsa, .apk, .re4, .sav, .lbf, .slm, .bik, .epk, .rgss3a, .pak, .big, wallet, .wotreplay, .xxx, .desc, .py, .m3u, .css, .rb,.p7c, .p7b, .p12, .pfx, .pem, .crt, .cer, .der, .x3f, .srw, .pef, .ptx, .r3d, .rw2, .rwl, .raw, .raf, .orf, .nrw, .mrwref, .mef, .erf, .kdc, .dcr, .cr2, .crw, .bay, .sr2, .srf, .arw, .3fr, .dng, .jpe,.cdr, .indd, .ai, .eps, .pdf, .pdd, .psd, .dbf, .mdf, .wb2, .rtf, .wpd, .dxg, .xf, .dwg, .pst, .accdb, .mdb, .pptm, .pptx, .ppt, .xlk, .xlsb, .xlsm, .xlsx, .xls, .wps

The virus appears to target only the local physical drives, as the current version of the threat does not seem to be able to affect network shares.

The ransomware has a distinctive feature – it scans for targeted containers on removable storage and builds an index file of the accessed data. This is used as a reference when the encryption engine runs. One of the ways to notice the early stage of the ransomware infection is to look for signs of an increased disk read or write operations or an increase in the power consumption of the computer itself.

When the encryption is complete the victims can spot that the target files have been renamed following the formula – ‘[random_characters].{[email protected]}.xtbl.

The victims are blackmailed to pay a ransom fee that ranges from 0.5 to 2 BitCoins.

[email protected] Ransomware Distribution

The ransomware has been discovered in several spam email attack campaigns. The delivery method chosen by the hackers is via macro-infected Documents. When the files are opened they appear as blank sheets that contain an unfamiliar name. The users are scammed to run the macro to “load” the contents of the message.
