CryptON Ransomware Description

Malware researchers reported the discovery of a new ransomware strain called Crypton. This Crypton ransomware is merely just another CryptoLocker strain that has been modified and used in several large attack campaigns.

The virus is not really that different from the core family code. This has helped the anti-virus companies and malware researchers to quickly update their definitions list.

Upon infection, the virus is able to scan for running processes and spawn new ones. Like other CryptoLocker ransomware strains it is also able to modify Windows files and load viral code into the host’s memory.

The encryption engine uses a strong cipher which targets the most popular file type extensions – documents, music, photos, videos, configuration files and etc. When this process is complete a ransomware note in Portuguese is shown to the victims. A machine-translated version of it reads the following:

All your files have been encrypted with Crypt ° Locker!
This means that, without a decryption key, recovering your files is not possible. If your files have a value for you and you are willing to pay me for the decryption key, contact me: [email protected], [email protected]
You have 3 days to pay for my services. After this period, you will have lost all your files.
Anti-virus software can remove Cryptolocker, but can not decrypt your files. The only way to recover your files – is to pay for the decryption key.
Information for IT Specialists: The data was encrypted with the AES (Rijndael) algorithm with the length of the 256-bit session key. The session key is encrypted with the RSA algorithm (2048 bits). The public key is included in the Cryptolocker. The private key for decryption of the session key is stored only in my database. To break this key, you need more than a million years.

CryptON Ransomware Distribution

The CryptON Ransomware follows the typical distribution tactics that are employed by the rest of the Cryptolocker strains.

  • Spam Messages – The spam messages typically use social engineering tactics to increase the infection ratio. They include hyperlinks that infect with the virus or directly attach the dangerous payload.
  • Infected Software Installers – Various software installers can often be bundled with dangerous viruses. In the most popular case these are pirated iliegal copies of legitimate applications and games that are often found on hacked download sites and P2P networks.
  • Redirects – Dangerous redirects can be used to deliver the viral payload. They include browser hijackers and hacked ads.
