Cerber 5.0.1 Ransomware Description

The Cerber 5.0.1 ransomware is currently under an active security investigation. Currently we do not have much information about the threat but as this is a new update of the Cerber 5 strain we assume that there are no major differences.

The virus follows the typical behavior that is used by the Cerber malware family – it encrypts target user files extensions which are encrypted by the AES cipher. A ransomware mesage is then crafted in various locations across the infected hosts which extorts the victims for a rasnomware payment to restore their files. The note reads the following:

Cerber 5.0.1 Ransomware Distribution

We assume that this virus is also spread using the RIG exploit kit and all other popular distribution methods – spam email campaigns, other exploit kits, browser hijackers, payload downloaders and etc.

Technical Details About the Active Cerber 5.0.1 Ransomware

It has been confirmed that the virus also deletes the Windows Volume Shadow Copies of the compromised hosts.

The server contacts about 1090 other hosts and two control domains. This gives an indication that the criminal operators have managed to create an extensive network of infected computers and control servers. The remote servers host other malicious payloads as well which makes the Cerber 5.0.1 very dangerous to potential victims as they may be hit with multiple threats in the same time.

The Cerber 5.0.1 ransomware crafts multiple files which are executed and then deleted to remove any traces of it. Other dangerous behaviour includes the manipulation of browsers (proxy settings modifications) and various privilege elevations.
